Project Description

The goal is to use the kinematic measurement wearable device to characterize the normal gate of a person and compare this “normal” gate in real time with the characteristics of the current gate as elderly person walks around the house. If an abnormal gate is detected, it will automatically send a call to a local caregiver who could drop by to see how the person is doing. The final design will be a non-intrusive monitoring device that detects the onset of a debilitating malfunction, such as a stroke, and, without the wearers intervention and calls a caregiver. The device would provide peace of mind for the caregiver (e.g., a child) to know that their grandparent hasn’t fallen as well as allow the older person the independence of not having their children or caregivers to drop in every day to see if they are all right.
